Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine offers medical care for safety and effectiveness before, during, and after each operation by anesthetizing patients in operating theaters, managing patients in post-anesthesia rooms, intensive care units, and in pain clinic. Its clinical field not just covers operating theaters, but patient care in intensive care units, pain medicine, and emergency rooms.

As anesthesiology has been rapidly growing, the department is being equiped with new medicines and anesthesia units, and is divided into several specialties: cardiac anesthesia; transplantation anesthesia; cranial nerve anesthesia; obstetric anesthesia; pediatric anesthesia; geriatric anesthesia; and outpatient anesthesia. The segmentation allows doctors manage patients' anesthesia by their medical conditions, and help their recovery by carrying out pain reduction, and management of patients in critical condition.

Pain medicine offers intensive care such as nerve block, nerve impulse, and thermal coagulation to patients who are suffering from acute and chronic pain, cancer pain, vascular pain, and other functional diseases, so that patients are able to return their ordinary life with less pain, and better physical functions.

Cardiology

image
The Division of Cardiology provides comprehensive care of the highest quality to patients with cerebrovascular disease, coronary heart disease, renal vascular disease, hypertension, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and arrhythmia.

Our cardiologists offer expert diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cardiac diseases through electrocardiogram, exercise tolerance test, holter monitoring, 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography and transesophageal scan.

Coronary angiography performed in a cardiac catheterization lab is a procedure that uses a special fluid called a contrast dye, and x-rays to see how blood flows through the heart. Our physicians also work collaboratively with cardiac surgeons for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) in patients with multiple vessel diseases, using state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

Transthoracic echocardiography and transesophageal scan are used to diagnose abnormalities of the heart including valve malfunctions. The division uses balloon dilation of the valve as a non-surgical treatment and prosthetic valve replacement as a surgical alternative.

We offer a course to update our healthcare professionals on the use and monitoring of anticoagulant. We operate a clinic for patients with hypertension which is the cause of stroke, heart failure, coronary artery diseases, kidney diseases, giving them and their family useful information about diet and exercise tips.

The actual goal of the department is not to treat emergency patients completely, but to bring them back close to normalcy. In other words, it is primarily devoted to performing emergency medical care on patient symptoms, rather than treating them on pathogenesis.

n the emergency room, we decide on ways for primary care after observing patient conditions and considering life-threatening factors. Then the specialists put them in the hospital for further care, or allow them to go home following initial treatment. Their responsibility also involves emergency room administration, emergency treatment before arrival, toxicopexis, prevention of diseases and trauma, education for local residents and rescue members.

All emergency rooms at five HUMC hospitals have been designated as official regional emergency centers.

Nephrology

image
Kidneys drain toxins out of the blood and expel substances that are filtered out, along with any excess water during urination, helping maintaining hormone balance. When kidneys are not functioning properly, it may cause edema, hypertension and a condition which urine contains protein or red blood cells.

An end-stage renal disease develops when both kidneys stop functioning. Therefore, it is very important for patients with diabetes and essential hypertension to routinely receive a check-up to prevent kidney functions from worsening.

We at the Division of Nephrology are active in finding better ways for early detection and treatment options of renal diseases and hypertension. In addition, our specialists collaborate with an organ transplant team to provide comprehensive care for patients who need kidney transplantation as well as perform peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis as new alternative treatments for a chronic renal failure.
